Story & Legends

Travel back through a thousand years of history

The castle legend

According to local legend, a beautiful queen once lived in this castle and fell in love with a prince from far away. Every night she would gaze at the sea from the window now known as the “Queen’s Window”, waiting for his return. This romantic tale has inspired many stories and films over the years.

How the castle was built

The castle was founded in the 10th century by the Byzantines as a defensive fortress against seaborne attacks. In the 12th and 13th centuries, Crusader knights expanded it, turning it into one of the most important military strongholds on the island. The three main levels of the castle – lower, middle and upper – reflect different periods of construction, each with its own story.

Disney inspiration

It is often said that Walt Disney visited this castle in the 1930s and was fascinated by its dramatic setting and fairy-tale silhouette. The pointed towers and the way the castle sits on the mountain ridge are believed to have inspired the design of Disney’s iconic castles in films such as “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and “Sleeping Beauty”. Today, St Hilarion is a favourite destination for Disney and fantasy fans.
